Walking along the Ken River offers a rewarding birdwatching experience, with a mix of waterbirds, raptors and woodland species. Winter and early spring months (December through March) are peak birding times, as many northern migratory birds arrive in the region. Start at the crack of dawn to catch the highest bird activity. The Beni Sagar, a large reservoir with shoreline greenery and surrounding trees, offers many resident wetland species and winter migratory birds.
In this tour we will pick you up from your hotel and drive to Madla Gate (30 mins), from where you will go on a walking trail with a naturalist.
The guided riverside walk takes approximately 1.5 hours, with stops for photography. You can spot vibrant kingfishers diving into the waters, and see different types of waders along the quiet reed beds and sandbars. Bar-headed geese, ruddy shelducks, thick-knees, and river lapwings can be spotted on this walk. Often you will see eagles, buzzards, and critically endangered vultures circling overhead. The surrounding canopy offers sightings of parakeets, flycatchers, woodpeckers, pittas, bee-eaters, and more.
On your way back to the hotel, we will also stop to visit the Beni Sagar lake. Between October and March, the lake acts as a critical refuge for thousands of migratory waterfowl flying in from Siberia and Central Asia. Expect to see large flocks of bar-headed geese, northern pintails, gadwalls, and various pochards crowding the waters. Herons, stocks, cormorants, ducks and egrets are commonly sighted.
