Cycling Trail along the Datla Hills

Cycling Trail along the Datla Hills

Background:

The Datla Hills are part of the Bundelkhand Craton, one of the oldest stable pieces of the Earth’s continental crust. If the entire history of the Earth were squeezed into a single 24-hour day, the Datla Hills were formed before breakfast, while the Himalayas didn’t pop up until the very last few minutes before midnight!

The word Datla means Teeth. Over 2.5 billion years, wind and water have eroded the softer surrounding landscape, leaving behind an incredibly hard, narrow quartz-and-granite ridge standing jaggedly above the flat plains. The sharp up-and-down jagged profile has given it the name ‘Teeth Mountain’.

In the shadow of these ancient hills, there are small Bundelkhand villages. They are primarily farmers, growing wheat, mustard, and other crops. Village life continues to follow old patterns, and homes here still cook traditional Bundelkhand food, using seasonal crops.

About this tour:

This is a private cycling tour starting at dawn from your hotel in Khajuraho. Please request packed breakfast from your hotel.

We begin cycling for 30 minutes on flat, paved backroads of the city, with the terrain changing to agricultural land gradually. The route goes through temple ruins, farmland, village homes and a water reservoir, with stops for photography. The Datla hills come into view after about an hour of cycling. We will park the cycles at the base, and go on a short hike uphill (45 minutes) for views of the surroundings. After a picnic breakfast, climb downhill and cycle back to your hotel. On the way back, we will stop for chai at a village to see the local way of life.
