Raneh Falls are a series of multiple waterfalls cascading into a 5-kilometre-long canyon. Five unique types of igneous rock form the canyon walls, creating a geological phenomenon unmatched in the Indian subcontinent - a rare volcanic crater edge where multi-coloured crystalline granite, dolomite, and quartz meet. Multiple streams of water, forming the Ken River, cascade through the jagged gorge.
Raneh Falls look completely different depending on the season. In the monsoon season (July to September), the river swells into a massive roaring torrent, completely submerging the rock formations. In October, the water begins to recede, and the rocks start becoming visible. Between November to February (winter season), the water separates into individual streams cascading down the rock steps, pooling into deep green reservoirs below. From March to June, the water levels drop deeply, exposing the beautiful rock formations fully.
Raneh Falls are located inside the Ken Ghariyal Sanctuary. The sanctuary is a dry deciduous forest, and excellent for birding. In winter it is possible to spot crocodiles and gharials sunning themselves on the rocks by the river.
On this safari, we will pick you up from your hotel by jeep and drive to the sanctuary (it is about 30 minutes from Khajuraho). The beautiful Ken River is visible even before we enter the sanctuary.
Once we enter the sanctuary, there is a 2-kilometre drive through scenic forest tracks, to reach the Raneh Falls parking lot. Deer, langurs and peacocks can be spotted on the drive. The drive is also very rewarding for bird watchers.
From the parking lot, we explore the falls on foot. The guided walk takes approximately 1 hour, with stops for photography. There are multiple viewpoints along the canyon with different waterfalls, all with dramatic views. The craggy, vertical rock faces around Raneh Falls double as critical nesting cliffs for endangered vultures, particularly the Egyptian Vulture. Over 200 species of migratory and resident birds frequent the riverbank during the winter.
After the walk we will return to the parking lot for the drive back to your hotel.
