The Old Village (Basti) of Khajuraho is believed to have been settled in the 9th/10th century under the early Chandela kings, along the banks of the Khajur Sagar Lake. The Chandela empire faded over time, scattering into smaller forts under sub-branches of the royal family. Khajuraho, once a major centre, declined into a small Basti (village settlement).
Today the Basti is home to about 500 households, segregated by caste. Old ways of life continue to coexist with modern ways, with homes reflecting a mix of old and new architecture. Three historic UNESCO world heritage temples are located in and around the basti - Brahma, Vaman and Javari.
On this Basti Walk we will stroll through the small lanes of the village, accompanied by a local guide. We will also visit one of the homes. We will see shops and local crafts of the village and wander along the lake bank to see the historic temples.
