Western Temples Heritage Walk

Western Temples Heritage Walk

Background:

The UNESCO World Heritage temples of Khajuraho are grouped together (for convenience) into the Western, Eastern and Southern Temples. The Western temples are a superb cluster of grand monuments and smaller shrines, in an open-to-air complex with a waterbody and green walking paths.

Over a period of 300 years, thousands of artisans created these stunning and diverse temples, dedicated to various deities. And yet somehow, the complex feels cohesive, as if the temples appeared all at once magically overnight.

Erotic sculptures decorate the outer walls of several Western Group temples. Although these sculptures have made Khajuraho famous, they represent less than 10% of the profuse carvings on the temples.

About this walk:

This is a private walking tour of the Western Group of temples, with a knowledgeable guide. The tour route includes the following:

  • Chausath Yogini Temple — ruins of an open-air shrine to tantric goddesses
  • Kandariya Mahadev Temple — the largest monument within the complex, sharing the platform with the Jagadamba Temple
  • Chitragupta Temple — dedicated to the Sun God
  • Vishvanath Temple, with a monolithic Nandi Shrine
  • Parvati Temple — a smaller goddess temple
  • Lakshmana Temple, with the adjoining Varaha Shrine
  • Matangeshwar Mahadev Temple — still in active use for prayers
